Healthcare Science Associate Director

NHS Education for Scotland

Robert Farley is the Associate Director for Healthcare Science at NHS Education for Scotland (NES) since 2009. He is responsible for resource allocation and commissioning of national postgraduate scientist training, NES CPD programmes for healthcare scientists, national events and representation at UK-level engagements on behalf of NHS Scotland’s training interests. His remit at NES includes training programme management and quality monitoring of specialty training in Healthcare Science, working closely with UK colleagues.

Rob is also a member of the Academy for Healthcare Science Regulation Board overseeing public protection for elements of the healthcare science workforce covered by accredited registers, and which includes audiology practitioners.

Prior to joining NES, Rob was seconded from the NHS to the Scottish Government’s Health Department, (CNOD), resulting in publication of Scotland’s first NHS Healthcare Science Action Plan in 2008. He worked with UK Government policy colleagues on the formulation of new training pathways for NHS Scientists.

He is registered with the Health and Care Professions Council as a Clinical Scientist, he is a Chartered Engineer and a member of the Institute for Physics and Engineering in Medicine. He has 30 years’ experience both as a clinical bioengineer in rehabilitation engineering, and in other Clinical Scientist roles in medical physics departments across Scotland. During this time, he was visiting lecturer on AHP and scientist training programmes in Scotland, and a partner of the Health and Care Professions Council. Earlier, he also had a short teaching sabbatical in The Gambia and has worked briefly in the oil industry as a research engineer.
