Gary Manson

SAS Education Adviser

NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde

Dr Gary Manson has been a staff grade doctor in A&E at the Royal Alexandra Hospital since 2006. He has always been interested in teaching and secured a postgraduate diploma in Medical Education in 2009 which helped him in the design and delivery of the departmental teaching programme for junior staff. He was finding the increasing clinical load somewhat overwhelming and decided to diversify his career to promote resilience and professional longevity.

Gary found the University of Glasgow had a wide range of teaching opportunities and he became involved in two renumerated posts as a vocational studies tutor and as the deputy lead for clinical procedural skills.

In addition, the SAS Development Fund helped him to undertake appraisal training and he now works as a postgraduate appraiser, a role he has found very rewarding and stimulating and has resulted in him having a better preparedness and more positive experience of his own appraisal process.

He was also supported in becoming recognised as a trainer which opens a plethora of opportunities for professional development and he is an educational and clinical supervisor for foundation doctors.

For those from NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde - you may also recognise Gary’s name as one of the three SAS educational advisors flying the flag for the SAS Development Programme and supporting SAS in accessing professional and career development opportunities.
