Associate Director (Professional Practice)

The Royal College of Nursing

Ellen is currently the Associate Director, Professional Practice for the Royal College of Nursing, Scotland. She is responsible for leading the professional ‘College’ arm of the RCN which includes the learning and development, knowledge and research and policy functions within RCN Scotland. Her role requires Ellen to have an overview of all education, policy, regulatory and professional practice issues which impact on nurses and nursing where she is regularly involved in extensive influencing and collaborating at a strategic level.

Ellen started her career as a registered nurse in Glasgow and gained experience and expertise in Burns and Plastic Surgery nursing as well as midwifery.  Ellen was a District Nursing Sister in Glasgow before moving into a range of clinical service and practice development posts where she established a number of integrated care services and became a Lead Nurse in the community. She then moved into Assistant Director of Nursing roles in Primary Care, first in Lomond & Argyll and then Greater Glasgow. Prior to joining the RCN, Ellen was Head of Nursing for the Rehabilitation and Assessment Directorate in NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde.

Ellen’s formal education qualifications include a BSc in Health Studies and in 2008 she completed her LLB at Glasgow Caledonian University where she is also an honorary lecturer.
