Healthcare Environment Inspectorate

Alastair started his career in regulation with local authorities before moving to the health and safety executive.  In August 2009, Alastair joined the Healthcare Environment Inspectorate (HEI), part of Healthcare Improvement Scotland, at its inception as an inspector. The role of HEI is to inspect hospitals throughout Scotland to ensure they are clean, hygienic and patients are not at risk of getting an infection.  It operates independently of the Scottish Government and NHS boards.  Alastair was part of the first HEI inspection in September 2009 and since then has undertaken inspections throughout Scotland.  As the senior inspector for the HEI team he manages a small team of inspectors and the inspection programme for the inspection of all community and acute hospitals and the Scottish Ambulance Service.  He is currently preparing the HEI to inspect against the newly published Healthcare Associated Infection standards.
